I have been quite copyright conscious for the better part of the past decade when I started learning about signature tags. Back when MSN had groups, I joined one group to learn how to make them, and joined a few others along the way.
After awhile, groups were starting to get into trouble for using graphics by various artists and a big controversy started in the Signature Tag community. Some artists were willing to work with groups and individuals as long as they followed the artists TOUs. But more groups were found (especially on Yahoo) that didn’t care to follow any copyright rules.
Many artists banded together and came up with a way to allow us to use their graphics; some free of charge, others you had to pay. I thought it was a fair deal, but was saddened that a few of my favorite artists were pay to use; prices were probably fair but I couldn’t afford it. And there were still many groups/individuals who continued using copyright images with disregard to the Artists.
It’s been several years since MSN dropped groups; some moved to forums. I’m not sure whatever became of the people or groups that disregarded Artists copyrights. But I’m guessing there might have been some that were fined or had legal issues.
Anyway… I think bloggers need to be more cautious when using photos. Either use your own or contact the owner and get permission. Otherwise you’re taking a chance of having legal issues like the writer below had.

- if you link back to the source and list the photographer’s name
- if the picture is not full-sized
- if you did it innocently
- if your site is non-commercial and you made no money from the use of the photo
- if you didn’t claim the photo was yours
- if you’ve added commentary in addition to having the pic in the post
- if the picture is embedded and not saved on your server
- if you have a disclaimer on your site
- if you immediately take down a pic if someone sends you a DMCA notice (you do have to take it down, but it doesn’t absolve you.)
NONE OF THAT releases you from liability. You are violating copyright if you have not gotten express PERMISSION from the copyright holder OR are using pics that are public domain, creative commons, etc. (more
What is the one skill you see in other bloggers that you wish you had?
A strong vocabulary.
I may not be writing as a published author, but having a strong vocabulary would benefit any writer.
Some of my writing consist of such simple vocabulary. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be boring. I want color, vivid color, in my writing; and not just from my page’s theme.
One thing I miss when I write, my Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary. It’s packed away with most of our possessions, so I use the online version sometimes, as well as other useful resources. (thesaurus.com)
Another reason I want to improve my vocabulary: sometimes I struggle with TOT (tip-of-the tongue phenomenon; sometimes called presque vu) or lethologica.
I’ve been feeling somewhat displeased with myself for not writing very often. I don’t always have or come up with material to write about; Sometimes I try to do it on the spot.
It’s been some time since I’ve written using a writing prompt and NaBloPoMo is next month. I will probably start doing those again. As a homeschooling mom, I sometimes give my kids Daily Prompts as writing assignments. I was reading over one of the prompts from last week and got the idea to use them for myself as well. They would give me even more practice in writing.
One of my biggest personal writing issues, because I’m a perfectionist, is that I want to improve on punctuation and sentence structure. Do I need a comma here? What can I do so this is like this? That doesn’t seem right. My brain is in a fog or something.
I always did well in English and Creative Writing while I was going to school, but that was two decades ago and it has slipped over the years. Most of what I’ve written since high school are poems or letters. I’ve tried journaling to see if that helps, but again it’s an issue of ‘on the spot’ writing.
Is this a form or writer’s block?

I have been a fan of the University of Michigan for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a home where sports was on television often. I grew up to like many of the teams that my dad follows and some that he can’t stand.
I will be enjoying the game tomorrow, but with a heavy heart.
My grandfather, my dad’s dad and a huge Michigan State fan, passed away almost five years ago. I remember when I was a teenager, sometimes my dad would go visit him on game day. Other times the entire family would visit and watch the game together. We always formed a friendly rivalry on game day. It seems that every member of my dad’s side of the family supported the Wolverines except grandpa. We used to tease each other throughout the game, especially during time-outs, commercial breaks, or at half-time.
I will admit, even though U of M and MSU are rivals I do support MSU, but only when they’re not playing U of M. I support most Michigan teams, after all that’s where I grew up. And I will always root for the Wolverines first.
Every season, when this rivalry comes around, I always think of my grandfather. It’s a reminder of so many other family get-togethers. And I miss those times together.
I love and miss you SAM, but I have to say it: Let’s Go BLUE!!!

It has been several months since I have worked out and it irritates me. When school started my personal schedule changed. Why? Because I homeschool my kids.
I have yet to figure out how to get my workouts in. It might be best to include it in our school day; Phys. Ed for them and a good workout for me. They’re young enough to engage in that. I’ve just got to get the scheduling figured out.
On another note, I have my computer back and I’ve been trying to get more done with my other blog. So I’ve been busy working to get things done for that too. Sometimes it seems like there isn’t enough time in a day to accomplish much of anything. sigh

Last week was my birthday. The BIG 3-9. Normally I would say how old I feel or complain that I didn’t want to get any older. This year I didn’t feel that way at all. I guess I’ve grown up a bit. I do still claim to be 29 though. (wink)
I had a pretty decent birthday. I have no complaints. I had my hubby and kids with me. The kids did homemade cards for me, Hubby gave me a beautiful card with a gift card, and my parents sent me, as per my request, a couple of workout DVDs. I am so excited to get started on them.
The kids and I sat down and watched Tae Bo Cardio Explosion yesterday.
WOW!! It’s crazy but I’m sure I’ll love it!!
I have to admit there are some things that I can’t do just yet.
I plan to modify those things so that I can complete the workout.
Also today was my weigh-in day.
I had a pleasant surprise.
A 3.4 pound lost since my last weigh-in.
You know what word I’m talking about…
No one I know likes hearing that word. When I write a post either here on my blog, on my group page, or my group’s twitter, I disguise it. I use words like active/activity, fitness, or workout. We need to change that. Exercise is NOT a Dirty Word.

Exercise… but my body will hurt.

Exercise… I will make the time to be more healthy.
Exercise… My body may hurt, but pain is weakness leaving the body.
Exercise… Sure I may be sore, but I’m using & strengthening muscles that haven’t been used in awhile.
Exercise… It’s hard work but the benefits will be worth it.
Exercise… Clears the mind, strengthens the body & it can help regulate SLEEP.
You can keep making excuses…
You can suck it up buttercup & tell that negative voice to SHUT UP!
I would like to apologize for my absence, but I don’t have much control over that at the moment.
Currently I have limited internet. By that I mean some days are GOOD, other days aren’t even worth sitting down with the laptop.
In other news:
- I have fallen off the fitness wagon & have been trying to get back on it. Asthma has been acting up so I need to be careful.
- I had a blessed, lovely Mother’s Day. My 2 blessings made cards for me, hubby gave me a card, cleaned, and made dinner.
- My daughter (6 y/o) lost her first tooth over the weekend and was very excited that the Tooth Fairy visited.
I hope all the mothers and grandmothers out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day.
